Jadon Sancho’s move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund will not be completed until after the player’s Euro 2020 participation is over – meaning that it could be 10 or more days before it is ultimately wrapped up.

Dortmund announced on Thursday morning that a deal worth €85 million (£73m) had been reached for the England international.

Meanwhile, Man Utd followed up by releasing a statement several hours later confirming the same information.

The memo from the Premier League side contained one important piece of information that the Dortmund release had not included regarding the timing of any potential deal.

“The signing is subject to contractual terms and a medical, which will be completed after Jadon’s involvement in the UEFA European Championship,” Man Utd stated.

When will Sancho sign for Man Utd?

What this means is that while everything appears lined up for the transfer to take place, it will not be made entirely official until Euro 2020 has concluded.

Sancho, who has played only a handful of minutes with England at the competition, will be part of the squad that faces Ukraine on Saturday. Should the Three Lions win that, they will have a semi-final against the Czech Republic or Denmark on 7 July then potentially the final on 11 July.

Only after that would Sancho complete his move to Man Utd before presumably being granted a break before joining his new team-mates for preseason before the 2021/22 campaign.

It is not necessarily usual for clubs to wait until the end of a major international tournament before completing a big deal. Netherlands pair Memphis Depay and Gini Wijnaldum have signed for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain respectively during Euro 2020, while David Luiz memorably became the world’s most expensive defender during his home World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

Nevertheless, after waiting for more than a year, Man Utd clearly seem happy to wait a few more days to finally get Sancho from Dortmund over the line.
