Dortmund to send Reinier back to Real Madrid if he doesn’t improve

Brazilian midfielder Reinier arrived in Europe in January of 2020, signed by Real Madrid from Flamengo for approximately €30m. However, the midfielder has had a tough time of it in the year and a half since, not helped by the coronavirus pandemic cutting short the 2019/20 season for Real Madrid’s B team or the injury he suffered after the return from lockdown.

To help him find playing time, Real Madrid organised a two-year loan with Borussia Dortmund for the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons, but the Brazilian was only used for 339 minutes in his first campaign in Germany as he failed to impress in training or when given a rare opportunity in a match.

This year, he has been given just six minutes so far by Marco Rose, although it should be kept in mind that Reinier was away with Brazil at the Olympic Games, where he featured five times as his side won gold.

There is clearly something there and Reinier was bought by Real Madrid because of some excellent performances in Brazil. But, his adaptation to European football has been slow and Borussia Dortmund are losing patience, so much so that they could return the player to Real Madrid in January.

Reinier has half a season to convince Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc, as well as Sebastian Kehl, the man lined up as his successor, both believe that Reinier needs to improve and offer more to the German club and to coach Marco Rose.

According to Bild, Borussia Dortmund would even consider terminating the loan agreement in January if the first half of the season doesn’t bring about significant improvement from the 19-year-old.

Reinier, then, knows that he needs step up over the coming months if he is to avoid an awkward early return from loan.
