Manchester United and Chelsea could be set to receive a significant boost in their chances of signing a key defender in the summer transfer window.

According to German newspaper Bild, Bayern Munich central defender Niklas Sule has decided that he will not renew his contract with the German champions.

Since the Germany international’s current contract at Bayern is set to expire at the end of the season, that will mean Sule can leave for free in the summer.

The publication claims that Bayern offered the defender a new salary of €10 million per year, but Sule has instead decided that his future lies elsewhere and will consider some new options next season.

Could Man Utd or Chelsea sign Sule?

Such news will obviously be music to the ears of both Premier League clubs, due to the fact that not only has Sule been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge for some time, but that he would also be an ideal signing for either club.

Man Utd will likely be in need of defensive cover next season and it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will be able to keep a hold of their own star defenders on expiring contracts between now and the end of the season.

Bild suggest that Chelsea are certainly in the running, but both English clubs could face stiff competition from Newcastle and Barcelona.

Naturally, the Geordie side may be able to offer Sule more money and Barca may offer a degree of prestige that he wouldn’t likely find in English football, but for now Chelsea and Man Utd are likely the frontrunners for the defender’s signature next season.

Whether or not Sule will opt for either club or instead a move to Spain, France or Italy remains to be seen.
