Erling Haaland’s future is expected to be decided in the coming weeks, Borussia Dortmund have confirmed.

The striker, who has scored 80 goals in 79 games for the club since joining them from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020, has a release clause in his contract that will come into force in the summer.

Given that figure is expected to be around the €75m mark, Haaland will be a relative bargain for any club that is successful in signing him.

As a result, there has been a scramble for his signature among all of Europe’s leading sides. Real Madrid are thought to be leading the race, though interest also primarily comes from Manchester United, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

In total, it is believed there are still five offers on the table for Haaland, with Chelsea potentially making up the numbers given their financial capabilities and the struggles of Romelu Lukaku in recent weeks. Barcelona have also talked themselves up as a potential destination for the Norway international star.

Any club that Haaland does move to is expected to have to foot the bill for the player’s substantial wages, but also sizeable commission to both agent Mino Raiola and the player’s father, Alf Inge. This has seen Bayern Munich notably distance themselves from the player.

The striker has been frustrated at Dortmund’s attempts to railroad him into making a call on his future – BVB had been hopeful that he might sign a new contract – and even publicly criticised the club’s stance.

Nevertheless, sporting director Hans-Joachim Watzke has confirmed that a deal is expected soon.

Speaking to RTL, he said: “I’m sure it will be sorted out in the next few weeks. It will take maybe a month, maybe six weeks.”

Despite an imminent deal, it may be the summer before Haaland’s destination is made official.
