Why April 30th is the deadline for Haaland’s decision
While the question of where Erling Haaland will be playing his football next season remains a mystery, the timeframe for his decision is becoming clearer and the Norwegian is expected to choose his next club in this very month of April.
According to Sport, Haaland’s representatives have already told all the interested parties that the decision will be taken this month. Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona are the clubs with the keenest interest, and they’ll each know before long if the 21-year-old has chosen them over the others.

Why must Haaland’s future be decided in April?
Besides the fact that Borussia Dortmund want to know Haaland’s plans as soon as possible, so that they can keep planning their 2022/23 squad, there is another reason for the April 30th deadline for clarifying Haaland’s future.
That’s because, according to Bild, the centre-forward’s release clause of €75m expires on April 30th, meaning Borussia Dortmund could charge a far higher fee if a transfer isn’t agreed before May 1st.

It should be noted that Borussia Dortmund want this fee of €75m paid in one lump sum, rather than over various instalments. As such, the clubs keen to sign Haaland will have to ensure they have the money ready in order to close the deal while the clause is still active.
That is an advantage for Manchester City and Real Madrid, who have no issues with liquidity right now, whereas paying out €75m would be much more difficult for Barcelona. Even if they can afford to pay the amount to Borussia Dortmund this month, they won’t know at this stage if they’d actually be able to register Haaland during LaLiga’s summer transfer window, given the Spanish league’s strict spending controls.
In any case, whether Haaland signs for Manchester City or Real Madrid or another club, the parties involved are all expected to be informed of the player’s decision by the end of April.
