The deal has appeared to be a formality for a week, yet it was drawn out over minor details regarding the terms of the temporary transfer.

It is believed that Sancho will move to Dortmund in a move that will cost the Bundesliga side a total of around €3 million, including wage contributions. This means that Man Utd will still face a sizeable bill to pick up the 23-year-old’s wages in the meantime.

No official announcement has been made, yet Sky Sports Deutschland have tweeted to the effect that an agreement was reached between the clubs and Sancho will return to the club where he made his big senior breakthrough.

Initially, there had been fears that Sancho would not go back to Dortmund because his wage demands simply made the loan impossible, yet Man Utd have relented on this aspect of the deal and will pay a huge portion of the player’s salary.

It had been hoped that a move would be completed in time for Sancho to hook up with the BVB training camp in Marbella, yet Sky Sports explained there was a disagreement over the option to buy clause in the loan contract.

It has taken several days to resolve the issue, yet Florian Plettenberg has indicated that an agreement has finally been reached.

The dithering over the completion of the move is symptomatic of the slow progress that the Red Devils have typically made in the transfer market in recent seasons, which is part of the culture that incoming owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is aiming to change along with right-hand man Sir Dave Brailsford.

What appeared a relatively simple agreement has taken several days to complete, to the advantage of nobody.

Dortmund’s Donyell Malen could move in the opposite direction, with FootballTransfers confirming that the Netherlands international is wanted by Man Utd.
