Barcelona forward Sergio Aguero may be forced to retire from football just one month after making his debut for the Spanish club.

According to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, the Argentina international will be forced to hang up his boots permanently after a recently revealed heart condition forced him off in a recent match for the club.

Aguero made the move to Barca this summer when his contract at Manchester City expired, bringing to an end a remarkably impressive 10-year spell at the English club.

However, while Aguero may have agreed to join Barca in May of 2021, he didn’t make his debut until mid October due to complications with the club registering new players and Aguero’s own injury concerns.

Unfortunately, horror struck just four games into his first season with the club when Aguero suffered a cardiac arrhythmia against Alaves in late October, after complaining of dizziness as well as chest pains before coming off the pitch.

’I am following the doctor’s instructions’

The news will undoubtedly be extremely disappointing to Barca fans, who were desperately looking forward to seeing Aguero settle into his new club and help Xavi’s side make their way back up the La Liga league table.

Over the course of his career, Aguero has scored 379 goals and bagged a further 118 assists in 663 games and many expected the penalty box striker to continue that impressive run of form at the Catalan side this season.

Aguero did push back on rumours suggesting his new-found condition would end his playing career, by taking to Twitter to respond to the allegations.

"Given the rumors, I can say that I am following the instructions of the club's doctors, doing tests and treatment and checking my progress within 90 days. Always positive," he wrote on Twitter.

However, it remains to be seen whether Barca or the player himself will be able to rule out retirement in the coming weeks.
