Barcelona’s contract talks with Ousmane Dembele have collapsed and the French winger is now set to leave the club on a Bosman transfer, according to reliable journalist Gerard Romero.

Dembele’s current contract at Camp Nou expires at the end of the 2021-22 season but Barcelona have been doing everything in their power to get the wideman to renew.

Coach Xavi and president Joan Laporta have continually praised Dembele and publicly urged him to sign a new deal.

And this campaign had appeared to have worked as in recent weeks it had appeared as if Dembele was on the verge of signing a new deal.

However, Gerard Romero – who is one of the most reliable transfer journalists in Spain – dropped a bombshell on Wednesday evening by revealing on his Twitch channel that contract talks have collapsed.

Romero explained that Dembele has rejected Barcelona’s contract offer and negotiations have broken down so badly they are at the point of virtually no return.

Dembele unhappy with Ferran Torres deal

Dembele is said to be unhappy that Barcelona are offering him a contract at much-reduced wages while at the same time putting together a huge financial package in order to sign Ferran Torres from Man City for €55 million plus €10m in add-ons.

With just three days to go until the January transfer window opens – and prospective free agents will be able to negotiate with new clubs – it now appears if Romero’s information is correct that Dembele will leave on a Bosman in June.

A number of Europe’s top clubs are interested in signing Dembele on a free transfer, including Juventus, Manchester United and Chelsea. Newcastle United are said to want to sign Dembele in January.

If talks can’t be resurrected Barcelona would rather sell him in January and make some money back.

Dembele joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund for €105 million plus €40m in add-ons in 2017 as a replacement for Neymar, who joined PSG in a world record deal.

However, Dembele’s time at Barcelona has been decimated by injuries and he has missed over 100 games due to physical problems. That works out at over 20 games a season on average.
