Barcelona set to announce Depay after website gaffe

Barcelona are soon expected to announce the signing of Memphis Depay after the club’s official website accidentally displayed the Dutchman’s shirt as available for online order.

Depay is leaving Lyon on a free transfer at the end of this month after deciding not to pen an extension at the Ligue 1 side.

Barcelona have been the red-hot favourites for his signature, although Juventus are reported to have launched a late move themselves.

However, a gaffe by the Blaugrana’s web team suggests – according to Marca – that Depay to Barcelona is already a done deal.

Barcelona’s online store displayed Depay’s shirt as being available to order before being later removed.

When trying to buy the shirt, an error occurred, but the fact Depay was listed suggests that Barcelona are already preparing for his unveiling.

Barcelona will present their new 2021-22 shirt on Tuesday evening at 20:00 CEST.

There have been reports in Spain that Depay’s signing will be announced on Sunday, but that seems unlikely given that the forward will be in action at Euro 2020.

Depay will start for Netherlands in their opening group game against Ukraine on Sunday evening.

The forward has been a target for Barcelona for over a year, ever since the arrival of Ronald Koeman as coach.

The Blaugrana were in negotiations to sign the former Manchester United winger last summer but couldn’t complete the deal.

He now seems set to finally arrive on a Bosman transfer.

Barcelona have already signed Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia on a free transfer this summer and were set to purchase Gini Wijnaldum on a Bosman until PSG hijacked the deal at the last minute.

Depay has scored 76 goals in 178 games during his five seasons at Lyon.
