Simeone signs new contract till 2024 as Atleti eye more league titles

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has extended his contract at the club to run until 2024.

Simeone and his side overcame the odds in La Liga last season by beating Real Madrid and Barcelona to the Spanish league title.

The league title was only the eleventh in Atleti’s history, but Simeone’s second since becoming the club’s manager in 2011.

Over the course of the 10-year period, Simeone has won no less than eight titles with the Spanish giants, including two Europa League trophies, one Spanish Cup and the two aforementioned league titles.

When coupled with two Champions League finals in 2014 and 2016, few would doubt that Simeone is the most successful manager in Atletico’s history.

As such, his decision to stay on at the club for a further three years is undoubtedly music to the ears of Atleti fans around the world.

Can Atleti win another league title next season?

Off the back of a troubling financial period for all clubs during the pandemic, it seems as though next season’s title race in Spain will come down to which club is able to ride out the storm.

So far, Atletico have not been forced to sell any of the squad that managed to beat their rivals to top spot.

In contrast, Barcelona are currently struggling to tie Lionel Messi down to a new deal and have been forced to sell a number of squad players to justify the signing of Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero.

Similarly, while Real Madrid maye have signed David Alaba from Bayern Munich, Los Blancos have already lost Sergio Ramos to Paris Saint-Germain and could also see Raphael Varane depart the club in favour of a move to Manchester United.

Simeone and his backroom staff haven’t made any big-name signings yet and may not be capable of flashing the cash this summer but it seems as though simply tying their stars down to another season at the club may prove to be enough to seriously challenge for another league title.
