Due to Barcelona's financial issues, the club were forced to shop in the free transfer market this summer, with Memphis emerging as their number one target as his contract with Lyon expired in June.

In addition to the Dutchman, Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia were also brought in as free agents.

Unfortunately for Memphis, he has joined Barca at one of the most tumultuous periods in the club's history.

The aforementioned financial problems and debt meant that, not only could money not be spent in the summer, but costs had to be drastically cut which is what ultimately let to the departure of legendary player Lionel Messi.

Messi, who Memphis would certainly have been expecting to play with following his move.

On the pitch things are poor under Ronald Koeman as they have won less than half of their games in La Liga so far, losing to Atletico Madrid and drawing against Athletic Bilbao, Cadiz and Granada.

In the Champions League, they have suffered two straight 3-0 defeats against Bayern Munich and Benfica.

Koeman is now under massive pressure and could be replaced, with Roberto Martinez currently one of the favourites to take over.

No regrets for Memphis

Memphis insists he does not regret making the move, however, despite the negative feeling around Barca currently.

"How could you ask that?" Memphis asked after a question from ESPN Netherlands about any potential regrets.

"It's Barcelona. I don't think you understand how big this club is and what it means for a player if you move to a club like this. I would never regret it.

"Despite results, I'm really happy at the club.

"It's been a difficult time [for the team]. I don't want to talk about that much, but people are acting like the season is already over.

"There are so many games to play. Everything is still open. But as a player, you feel responsible and you take responsibility.

"You care. Every player takes responsibility at Barca. That's normal for a club like Barcelona."

Individually, Memphis has scored three goals and recorded one assist in nine starts for the Blaugrana so far.
