Barca’s problems have been long brewing but all seem to have come to a head together, causing an unprecedented period of strife and unrest at Camp Nou.

These issues started in the summer when it became apparent they could not tie Lionel Messi down to a new contract, continued when senior players had to defer their wages to allow new signings Eric Garcia, Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero to be registered and are still going on months later.

Barcelona, it is reported by Esport 3, will not be allowed to re-sign 38-year-old right-back Dani Alves by La Liga.

The stumbling block is that La Liga do not believe that the Brazil international is to be paid a salary of just €1.

This rejection, perhaps more than any other incident so far, shows just how much rebuilding work that new head coach Xavi has to do with the squad.

It brings into focus just how hard it will be to sign anyone.

Dani Alves, after all, should be relatively attainable, even in Barcelona’s difficult position. He is a player who is a free agent, having left Sao Paulo in September, while he is clearly eager to play for the club again, having done so with some distinction during a previous spell from 2008 until 2016.

Regardless of whether Alves returning is seen as a step forwards for Barca or not, the fact that they cannot sign him on even a token salary is a humiliating slap in the face and begs the question of just who might be able to arrive at Camp Nou, not just in January, but in the months and years ahead.
