‘The opportunity of my life’ – Aubameyang delighted at Barca move
New Barcelona signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has branded his chance to play with the Camp Nou side as the opportunity of his lifetime, though he did express regret as to how his career at Arsenal ended.
Aubameyang joined Barca after leaving the Gunners in acrimonious circumstances. After four years at the club, he was ushered out the backdoor, having been stripped of the captaincy amid disciplinary issues.
Furthermore, the Premier League outfit were reportedly surprised to learn that he had flown to Barcelona on Transfer Deadline Day, apparently to engineer a move.
After a saga he admitted was stressful, a deal with the Catalan side was completed – much to the Gabon international striker’s joy.
“I’m facing the opportunity of my lifetime,” he told the press when presented as a Barcelona player on Thursday. “I’m living a dream that I hope I don’t wake up from.
“I have always had the dream of playing in La Liga. It is an incredible opportunity.”
Aubameyang has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the club that runs until the end of June 2025, though he says it is his target to see the deal out.
“Of course, I hope to be at Barcelona for many years. I will work hard to stay as long as possible,” he said.
“I'm ready and I'm looking forward to getting started. I haven't played a game in a long time, but in my head it's very clear that I'm here to play and help out soon. I know we are going to return to the top little by little.”
Aubameyang on Arsenal
Aubameyang also touched on his departure from Arsenal, the nature of which he regrets.
“They were complicated months, but I think that's how football is sometimes. For my part, I have never wanted to do anything wrong and now I think that this is the past. I want to think about the present and right now that is my answer,” he said.
Aubameyang’s last competitive action was in early December, but he could feature against Atletico Madrid as early as Sunday.
