Lionel Messi could return to Barcelona as early as this summer, in the opinion of the son of Diego Maradona, Diego Sinagra.

In the summer of 2021, Messi completed an emotional Barcelona exit, signing for Paris Saint-Germain after the Blaugrana revealed that they could no longer afford his wages.

The Argentine had previously agreed a pay cut to remain at the club, but player registration issues meant that Messi could not sign a new deal after his previous contract expired.

He has not hit his Barcelona heights at PSG, scoring just two league goals in 15 appearances, though he does have eight assists to his name in Ligue 1.

Sinagra believes that Messi is unhappy in France and could campaign for a Barca return.

“I am convinced that Leo Messi will return to Barca. Maybe this coming summer," Sinagra told Diario Sport.

"He doesn't look happy there.

"Obviously he is a great player and when you play like that you show it wherever he is. But his place is Barcelona, without a doubt."

Barca coping without Messi?

Due to his nationality, talent, and the fact he played for Barcelona, Messi has continually been compared and contrasted to Maradona, which is why Sinagra is constantly asked about the pair.

The Catalan side have become significantly weaker in the 2021/22 season, only recently making their way back into the top four under Xavi.

Sinagra is confident that the club has the talent to succeed, even without Messi.

“What club was not going to suffer his [Messi's] loss?" he continued.

"For me they are coping well.

"If I say that Barça plays with [Ousmane] Dembele, [Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ferran [Torres], with [Adama] Traore and [Frenkie] De Jong, it's a team."
