Barcelona vice-president Rafa Yuste has all but ruled out a move for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.

Just a few days after FootballTransfers revealed that the Spanish giants had stepped away from negotiations with the Norway international, the Barca boss was asked about the potential of such a move and suggested that it was now looking highly unlikely.

"We have found ourselves in a terrible economic situation that has prevented us from fulfilling our expectations,” said Yeste in an interview with Marca.

“As the president said, we have to protect our club and for that we can't do operations of this magnitude.

“I won't say that it is unviable because in the world of football everything can change, but it is very difficult.”

As we explained just a few days ago, Barca have now drawn a line under their efforts to sign Haaland and will instead turn their attention towards another Bundesliga talisman in Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

Could Barca now sign Lewandowski?

Barca now feel as though they have a much better chance of signing Lewandowski because of two main factors.

The first is the simple fact that the Poland international has just over one year left on his contract in Munich and if he refuses to sign a new deal with Bayern, the Bundesliga giants would be compelled to sell him this summer while they still have a chance.

The second reason why Lewandowski could be obtainable for Barca is due to the fact that reports in Germany stipulate that the senior striker has always harboured dreams of playing in Spains and a move to Barca may be his final chance of doing exactly that.

As such, rather than blow the bank on Haaland, Barca are now seriously considering a move for his Bayern counterpart and they may well be in luck this summer when they try to sign him.
