Barcelona thrashed their bitter rivals 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday evening thanks to goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (2), Ronald Araujo and Ferran Torres.

Aubameyang and Ousmane Dembele grabbed most of the headlines after the game for their brilliant performances but Pique was also a standout performer in the centre of defence.

Madrid barely created a chance all game as Pique put in a flawless performance.

What did Shakira say about Pique?

“Gerard won’t let me say these things publicly,” Shakira said.

“But only he, with his heroism, can play like this, overcoming injury and pain and always giving his best. It’s not just because he’s my husband, but he’s the best centre-back in the world. I said it!”

Despite recently turning 35, Pique is still playing at a very high level.

Barcelona are looking to strengthen their defence in the summer transfer window.

A deal to sign Chelsea centre back Andreas Christensen, whose contract is expiring, on a free transfer is already reported to have been agreed.

Barcelona have also been in talks with Christensen’s Chelsea teammate Cesar Azpilicueta, whose contract also runs out at the end of the season.

Ajax right back Noussair Mazraoui is another player who could potentially arrive.

But given his current form and leadership skills, Pique seems set to continue to be an important part of Xavi’s revolution at Barcelona.

Xavi has had an incredible impact on the club since returning as manager in November.

When he arrived, Barca were struggling near mid-table. Now they have embarked on a 12-match unbeaten run to consolidate third position. They are also favourites to win the Europa League as they are through to the quarter-final.
