Robert Lewandowski has not agreed to complete a transfer to Barcelona from Bayern Munich, FootballTransfers can confirm.

It was reported in Poland previously on Monday that the Poland international was poised to leave the Allianz Arena to join the Camp Nou side, but a source close to the player has debunked these claims.

Lewandowski has neither signed a pre-contract agreement with the Camp Nou side or agreed to join them.

Nevertheless, question marks remain over the long-term future of Lewandowski, whose contract at Bayern will expire in 2023. With the possibility of losing the prolific striker for nothing, the Bundesliga champions could be tempted into a sale in the summer as a result.

Links to Barcelona are not set to fade after the latest reports, while Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Liverpool were also cited in the Polish media, which suggested that the striker favoured a switch to Spain.

Why is Lewandowski linked with leaving Bayern?

Having won everything at Bayern, it’s not too hard to imagine why Lewandowski would prefer a move elsewhere after spending no less than 12 years in the Bundesliga.

However, much of the supposed interest in a move to Barca has actually come down to Bayern’s own reluctance to give the striker what he wants.

Bayern have been slow to open contract talks with the player, who has scored at the rate of more than a goal per game in each of the last three seasons with the club.

While this might be surprising, given Lewandowski is now 33, Bayern could simply be biding their time to see if the No.9’s performance level drops with age. Committing to an extended deal with the forward, then, could be seen as risky from their perspective given they do not necessarily have the limitless wealth of clubs in the Premier League, for example.

Lewandowski, though, is showing few signs of slowing down, hence the extensive interest from Barcelona and elsewhere.
