The numbers that show why Madrid are desperate to tie Modric down to new deal
Real Madrid are through to the semi-finals of the Champions League but that doesn’t mean the club will avoid some major upheaval this summer.
Alongside the imminent arrival of Paris Saint-Germian striker Kylian Mbappe, the Spanish giants are expected to sell a number of squad players in the summer window.
However, one player that looks set to not only stick around but be offered a new deal is none other than playmaker-in-chief Luka Modric.
According to reports from Sergio Santos, the veteran midfielder has an offer on the table to extend his time at Madrid by a further year, which would see him remain at the club until 2023.
And despite being 36 years of age, the numbers suggest that Modric is having one of his best ever seasons with Los Blancos.
Why Modric deserves a new deal
As the world bore witness to in midweek, Modric is still an outstanding player who can dictate the outcome of a game against the very highest quality of opponent.
Indeed, alongside pulling the strings in the middle of the pitch, Modric has also bagged no less than three goals and nine assists in 37 appearances for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. And when we break that down into match averages it’s very impressive.
So far this season the Croatia international has averaged 0.09 goals and 0.27 assists per 90 minutes, which works out at 0.36 goals and assists per 90 minutes.
Not only is that more impressive than last season’s 0.28 goals and assists per 90 minutes, but it’s actually Modric’s best return over the course of his last five seasons at the club.
So rather than slowing down or losing his cutting edge in the centre of Madrid’s midfield, the 36-year-old star seems to be as sharp as ever. Which may explain why the Spanish giants are keen on offering him a new deal.
