Why Mbappe’s Real Madrid transfer could break down
Kylian Mbappe was widely expected to leave PSG to sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer, but the deal now appears to be in the balance.
Previously, it was taken for granted that Mbappe was heading to the Bernabeu, but it is evident that this is no sure thing.
The player has stressed for months that he has not made his mind up about his future, and with barely two months of his current PSG contract remaining, that remains the case.
Although there are various reports, most agree now that there is no certainty that the World Cup winner moves to Spain this summer, although there is a consensus that Madrid still remain favourites to sign him.
Why is the deal hanging by a thread, though?
Mbappe’s image rights demands may thwart Real Madrid move
Goal reports that image rights threaten to be a sticking point for Real Madrid.
Mbappe has indicated that he wants to have 100% control of these but, according to the report, Los Blancos are only willing to go 50-50 on this front. PSG, meanwhile, are happy for the player to have the monopoly over them he desires.
This report stands up to scrutiny given Mbappe’s strong stance over the use of his image while on international duty with France. Indeed, he went on strike with the national team over commercial duties earlier this year, causing a stir in the process.
Furthermore, it is reported that the possibility of Real Madrid being excluded from the Champions League for their Super League stance could see him remain in Paris.
Mbappe wants PSG to restructure
Meanwhile, he is not entirely happy at PSG either. Reports in France from FootMercato state that he is open to signing a new deal with the club but wants evidence of wholesale structural changes that will make it possible.
Clearly, there is a long way yet to run in the Mbappe transfer saga, whether he goes to Real Madrid or whether he stays at PSG.
