Real Madrid will be left in a crisis transfer situation if Kylian Mbappe confirms reports that he is set to sign a new contract with PSG.

It had long been expected that Mbappe would complete a move to the Bernabeu this summer, at which point his contract will end with the Ligue 1 side and he will become a free agent.

However, the indication in recent hours is that Mbappe has completed a remarkable U-turn in his thinking and will instead extend his contract at Parc des Princes. Di Marzio, who is considered one of the most reliable transfer specialists in the business, was one of the first to confirm the news.

It's not only about Mbappe

Missing out on one of the world’s top players would be a tremendous blow to Real Madrid at the best of times, but they had planned their whole summer transfer strategy around signing Mbappe and the knock-on effects promise to be tremendous.

Not only will Mbappe have escaped them, but in concentrating their focus on the World Cup winner, they have also allowed Erling Haaland to move to Manchester City – a deal that is virtually certain to be concluded in the coming days.

Indeed, virtually all of the game’s top available forwards are well advanced with other moves.

Perhaps the most notable of these is Bayern Munich attacker Robert Lewandowski, who has indicated that he will not sign a new deal with the club. The Pole, however, has his eyes apparently set on a switch to Barcelona – a further slap in the face for Real Madrid.

The other options on the table do not look nearly as appealing. While Darwin Nunez, Yeremy Pino and Raphinha are all players with potential, none have the undoubted star quality of the aforementioned trio.

Real Madrid, though, are not in a terrible place. Karim Benzema is at the peak of his game, despite his veteran years, while Vinicius Junior is a player hitting the type of level that Los Blancos have long hoped for.
