Paris Saint-Germain have entered a war of words with La Liga, and it could turn sour, having all stemmed from Kylian Mbappe’s decision to renew with the French club.

It was widely expected that Mbappe would join Real Madrid, but a boosted contract offer along with political pressure, encouraged the forward to extend his stay at PSG.

That left many in Madrid and Spain disappointed, and La Liga President Javier Tebas has hit out at the French club, accusing them of breaking Financial Fair Play regulations.

La Liga announced on Thursday that they had lodged a formal complaint about PSG’s spending power, making their claim to UEFA.

The Spanish league have also said to have asked lawyers to look into a possible conflict of interest scenario relating to PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who has high ranking roles at UEFA and BeIn Sports.

What have PSG said in response?

PSG, though, are having none of it, and have responded to the complaints lodged with a statement of their own, saying La Liga President, Javier Tebas, needs to have a look at himself before launching complaints.

“The first person who needs lessons on conflicts of interest, financial management and market distortion is Javier Tebas. We look forward to seeing who he threatens and sues next week – and which hat he’ll be wearing when doing so,” PSG said.

The French club also said they are fully compliant of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules and that Mbappe’s new deal was struck in a sustainable manner, as they earn back their money through commercial income.

They also add that Al-Khelaifi isn’t breaching any conflict of interest rulings, and that his roles are reviewed in order to avoid any such issues.

PSG weren’t the only club La Liga weren’t happy about – they also pointed fingers at Manchester City, another state-managed club, believing their “irregular financing” has distorted the football transfer market.

Florentino Perez, the Real Madrid President, also recently came out and said that Mbappe’s decision was influenced by money and politics, and that it was difficult for his club to compete with that level of influence.
