Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admits that he is having trouble comprehending Barcelona's spendthrift summer transfer window.

The Catalans have been arguably the most active team throughout the window, adding several top talents to their squad after a disappointing 2021-22 season.

Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Jules Kounde, Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen have all arrived at Camp Nou, while Barca also swooped for Racing Santander youngster Pablo Torre and clinched contract renewals for Ousmane Dembele and Sergi Roberto.

Their spending spree may also continue, with Bernardo Silva and Marcos Alonso both linked with the club.

All that has been achieved despite Barca's perilous financial situation, and there was doubt right up to the last minute whether they would actually be cleared to register their new signings for Saturday's season opener against Rayo.

The now-famous economic levers, essentially the selling off of club commercial and television rights, have allowed president Joan Laporta to raise funds now while losing income down the line, and Klopp is unsure if such decisions are wise.

Klopp surprised by Barca spending

Asked by Kicker whether he understood Barcelona's liberal spending, the German replied simply: “No. Not for various reasons.

“One reason is that I’m not a financial expert.

“The second: If you tell me I don’t have any money, then I don’t spend anything anymore.

“My credit card has also been cut up twice, luckily that was a few years ago.

“I’m watching this like a football fan, I don’t understand.

“I’ve found the club to be outstanding over the last few decades that I’ve been watching football and I hope they pull it off.”

Barcelona opened the La Liga season with a 0-0 draw against Rayo, and will be back in action on Sunday when they visit Real Sociedad.
