Real Madrid outcast Marco Asensio is set to receive the chance to get his career back on track in Serie A.

Asensio has been marginalised at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu for the start of the 2022-23 season, and played no part in their first La Liga game against Almeria at the weekend.

The 26-year-old has just one year left on his contract, and Madrid are looking to sell now in order to avoid losing him on a free next summer, though publicly at least the Merengue are keeping their options open.

"He is a Madrid player and I consider him as such," coach Carlo Ancelotti told reporters after the clash.

"If he deserves to play, he will play. You have to remember the goals he scored and what he did last season.

"You have to wait until August 31 to find out what happens and what he decides."

Among the possible destinations for the forward appear Roma, who according to Mundo Deportivo are weighing Asensio up as a possible replacement for Nicolo Zaniolo.

Should he move to the Italian capital Asensio would be joining up with a man who knows all too well the pressures of Madrid.

Jose Mourinho spent three seasons in the hotseat at the Bernabeu before resigning in 2013, the year before Asensio was signed from Mallorca as an 18-year-old prospect.

The ex-Manchester United and Chelsea boss enjoyed a strong debut season with Roma, taking the club to sixth place while also lifting the inaugural UEFA Conference League title at the expense of Feyenoord.

Any movement on Asensio currently hangs on Zaniolo's future in Rome.

The 23-year-old Italy star has many admirers, with Tottenham and Juventus among those reportedly interested in his signature.

Reports in Italy claim that Spurs had a €40 million bid for the youngster rejected recently, with Roma holding out for €50-60m in order to dispense with their gem.
