The Catalan outfit still managed to spend more than €150 million despite beginning the summer in financial disarray and fighting the risk of losing more key players after the departure of Lionel Messi last summer.

A host of ‘financial levers’ were activated by the club, which included selling off future TV revenue and portions of their merchandising company in order to fund their transfer business.

Robert Lewandowski: €45m - from Bayern Munich

Franck Kessie: free - from AC Milan

Marcos Alonso: free - from Chelsea

Hector Bellerin: free - from Arsenal

Andreas Christensen: free - from Chelsea

The biggest outlay of the summer was Raphinha, who signed for Barca for €58m after rejecting Chelsea despite the Blues offering more money to Leeds.

Barca also beat Chelsea to the €50m signing of Jules Kounde from Sevilla as well as completing a €45m move for striker Robert Lewandowski after he forced his way out of Bayern Munich.

Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Marcos Alonso and Hector Bellerin all arrived on free transfers, however the majority of Barcelona’s signings could not immediately be registered with La Liga until the club lowered their wage bill.

Miralem Pjanic: free - to Sharjah FC

Riqui Puig: free - to LA Galaxy

Martin Braithwaite: free - to Espanyol

Oscar Mingueza: free - to Celta Vigo

Neto: free - to Bournemouth

Barcelona were desperate to get a host of high-earners off their wage bill and had to allow Martin Braithwaite, Oscar Mingueza, Neto, Riqui Puig and Miralem Pjanic all leave for free in order to relieve the financial strain on the club.

Only two departures generated transfer fees, with Philippe Coutinho making his loan move to Aston Villa permanent for €20m and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a €14m deadline day signing for Chelsea.

Barca also spent the majority of the summer trying to sell Frenkie de Jong, with Manchester United having a bid of €85m accepted, but the Dutch midfielder refused to leave despite legal threats from his club.

Nico Gonzalez: loan - to Sevilla

Sergino Dest: loan - to Milan

Clement Lenglet: loan - to Tottenham

Samuel Umtiti: loan - to Lecce

Ez Abde: loan - to Osasuna

Barcelona’s loan business saw two major albatrosses lifted from their wage bill, with French defenders Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti joining Tottenham and Lecce respectively.

American defender Sergino Dest turned down interest from Man Utd to join Milan on loan, while young midfielder Nico Gonzalez went to Sevilla and Ez Abde signed for Osasuna.
