Kylian Mbappe announced his departure from Paris Saint-Germain on Friday night, bringing the curtain down on seven trophy-laden seasons at the Parc des Princes.

The 25-year-old became PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer during his time in the French capital - scoring 255 goals in 306 games - and won six Ligue 1 titles as well as three Coupes de France.

The World Cup winner had been widely expected to join Real Madrid back in 2022 when his previous contract was coming to an end but stunned the world by instead announcing a renewal with the Parisians.

Although Mbappe was pictured holding up a shirt with MBAPPE 2025 on it, it was later revealed that the new contract only extended until the end of the 2023-24 season, with an option for the player to remain for an extra year.

The striker enraged his club last summer when he declined the option to renew, being temporarily removed from Luis Enrique’s first team and being forced to train with the PSG ‘bomb squad’, made up of players destined for an outbound transfer.

He was later restored to the team, becoming top scorer yet again as PSG romped to yet another league title.

However, Mbappe’s Champions League dream went up in smoke at the semi-final stage with the French side beaten 2-0 on aggregate by unfancied Borussia Dortmund.

Mbappe expected to join Real Madrid

Then came the player’s declaration that he would be leaving. Although it wasn’t stated in his farewell video, it’s widely expected that Mbappe will join Madrid in the off-season in what would be a wallet-busting free transfer.

It’s now been revealed by Diario AS that Mbappe’s favoured No.10 shirt might NOT be available for him next season and instead he might have to plump for the No.9 shirt instead.

That’s because there remains considerable uncertainty over the future of Luka Modric. The 38-year-old midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season but it’s understood he would like a one-year extension.

Madrid operate a policy of only offering one-year deals to players over 30 and so far there has been no breakthrough in talks over a new contract for the Croatian legend.

However, should an agreement be reached, he will retain his No.10 shirt for one more season at least, with Mbappe taking the No.9.

If Modric leaves then Mbappe could get his wish of landing the prized Real Madrid No.10 shirt from day one.
