Cody Gakpo gave Liverpool supporters another reason to celebrate on Sunday as he dropped bombshell news about Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Trent has been expected to depart Liverpool as a free agent to sign for Real Madrid upon the expiry of his contract in the summer, yet rumours last week suggested that the England right-back may be having second thoughts about leaving for Spain.

Gakpo only fuelled these when speaking to club media as the Reds celebrated their title success following a thumping 5-1 against Tottenham.

Asked about sealing glory for Liverpool, the Netherlands international winger dropped these words in: “We didn’t change much from last season, and now with Mo and Virgil staying, and hopefully Trent as well, then you can keep building on that team for many years to come.”

There were periods when it appeared that Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk might leave, but both have committed to new contracts, with Liverpool already officially announcing that the superstar duo will stay.

Trent to change his mind on Real Madrid?

Greater doubt has been reserved for Trent, yet there are increasing whispers that he might be about to change his mind over Real Madrid.

Central to his concerns are a likely change of management at the Bernabeu in the summer, with Carlo Ancelotti liable to depart.

This became a greater likelihood at the weekend when an ill-disciplined performance from Los Blancos saw them defeated in the final of the Copa del Rey to rivals Barcelona.

Alexander-Arnold would join Real Madrid as their first-choice right-back, but the Spaniards cannot offer the player the type of stability that is clearly on offer at Liverpool, where Arne Slot has barely had to touch Jurgen Klopp’s side.

This is likely to be the case once again in the summer, with Salah and Van Dijk committing to new deals. Nevertheless, a slow process of renovation will need to take place at Anfield, with both stars well over 30.

Alexander-Arnold committing himself to the Anfield club for another contract would be a huge boost and solve a summer transfer problem sporting director Richard Hughes was no doubt bracing himself for.
