Los Blancos were hoping to add one more player to their ranks in Kylian Mbappe but the Frenchman performed a dramatic u-turn by extending his contract at Paris Saint-Germain and turning down Real.

Real decided against signing an alternative to Mbappe and opted towards keeping the majority of the core that has seen them achieve major success over recent years.

What players have Real Madrid signed in 2022-23?

Aurelien Tchouameni: €100m - from Monaco

Antonio Rudiger: free - from Chelsea

Real made just one signing for money in the summer, however it was an expensive outlay on Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, with the deal initially costing €80m and rising to €100m with add-ons.

The Frenchman was the club’s priority target and he turned down an approach from Liverpool to sign for Real on a six-year deal just days after the two clubs faced off in the Champions League final.

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger was the only other arrival to the Bernabeu, penning a four-year deal after his contract with the Premier League side expired.

The biggest departure for Real was that of Casemiro, who signed for Manchester United in August after deciding to pursue a new challenge following nine seasons at the club.

The Brazilian also believed he would see his playing time limited, following the arrival of Tchouameni, with United paying Real an initial €70m, with another €10m in add-ons.

Isco was released following the expiry of his contract, along with Gareth Bale, who signed for MLS side Los Angeles FC, and club legend Marcelo joined Greek side Olympiacos after 15 seasons with Real.

Luka Jovic, a €60m arrival in 2019, departed for free to Fiorentina while fringe players Takefusa Kubo, Miguel Gutierrez and Borja Mayoral all left for pastures new.

Which players have Real Madrid loaned in 2022-23?

Reinier: loan - to Girona

Antonio Blanco: loan - to Cadiz

Brazilian midfielder Reinier joined Girona on loan as he still has yet to receive Spanish citizenship, meaning he cannot be registered in Real’s squad as they do not have space for any more non-EU players.

Midfielder Antonio Blanco also was loaned to La Liga side Cadiz for the season.
