Barcelona have identified defensive midfield as a position of priority and wish to improve it in the coming transfer windows, with the goal to replace Sergio Busquets.

Busquets’ form has been inconsistent over the last few months and he is set to leave the club at the end of the season, which will also mark the expiry of his contract.

Barcelona are looking for a midfielder who can provide fluidity to the team going forward and is also involved in the team’s defensive duties.

As a result, they’re looking at a possible move for PSV’s Ivorian midfielder Ibrahim Sangare, who was previously a target for Manchester United and Chelsea.

Barcelona eyeing Sangare move

According to Sport, Barcelona are seriously considering the player, having admired his rise with the Dutch side in recent times and will rival the English outfits for his signature.

Chelsea were looking at a move for him late in the summer transfer window, but were priced out and ended up signing Denis Zakaria on loan from Juventus.

The 24-year-old has been tracked by Barcelona since he was a Toulouse player and his growth at PSV has been appreciated by those at the Blaugrana.

While there is no contact between the clubs or the player’s representatives, he is an option as they have identified improvements in his game in terms of recovering the ball and progressing it forward.

It was reported in the summer that PSV will look for a fee over €30 million if any club wants to sign him and Barcelona would be willing to negotiate that if they wish to get the Ivorian.

Other than Sangare, Barcelona have other candidates for the role such as Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez, while Ruben Neves is also an option but not one particularly favoured by Xavi.

Other than that, if Barcelona want midfielders on free transfers, players such as Jorginho and Youri Tielemans – currently of Chelsea and Leicester City – are considered.
