Revealed: Why Barcelona want to make more transfers in January
Barcelona had a busy summer transfer window, signing a host of players including Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Jules Kounde and others, and the spending his set to continue in January.
The Blaugrana activated multiple economic levers – the sale of shares of the club against future profits – and were able to complete plenty of transfer business.
Barcelona won’t be able to activate more levers in January, but they are expecting a busy transfer window regardless due to a financial stipulation in place.
They have identified a host of targets and could well move for them when they are given the chance in the winter transfer period.
Barcelona set for winter transfers
According to Diario Sport, Barcelona could be subjected to a 1:4 rule from next summer onwards which is why they’ll be looking to sign players in January.
The club aren’t expected to earn much ahead of next season and can’t pull further economic levers, which is why they can only spend 25 cents of each euro reported as income.
This would limit Barcelona’s power in the transfer market and they won’t be able to spend as freely as they did this past summer, which could be a problem for their squad.
Barcelona are set to lose certain players on free transfers, including Sergio Busquets, and they will have to find a way to replace him before that in order to not have a depleted squad.
La Liga are not going to publicly report the salary cap until February, which would keep Barcelona on the 1:1 rule, allowing them to spend every euro they earn as income.
This would give Barcelona greater power in January, and allow them to make signings such as Bernardo Silva, Inigo Martinez and others they have targeted in recent times for their squad.
🚨 Jorginho's agent was spotted in Barcelona recently! 🕵️
He becomes a free agent in June and the Spanish club are interested.
However, they are also keeping tabs on the contract situations of N'Golo Kanté, Youri Tielemans, İlkay Gündoğan and Naby Keita.

A way to raise funds would be through the sale of players, and many have been linked with an exit in recent times, including Frenkie de Jong, Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique.
Club President Joan Laporta spoke about the plans for the winter, and admitted there are signings that will be made in the future should the chance arise.
“We are working on the market,” Laporta told Barca TV. “We have had talks with the coaching staff and we intend to improve the squad, which is already very powerful but can still improve more.”
“We are working with the coach, with the technical secretariat and the director of football for this winter market. We have been analysing things for some time and the team will be improved if we have the chance to do so.”
