Barcelona didn't want me because I'm Canadian, claims Davies
Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies recently shared an interesting revelation about his past, claiming that Barcelona had an opportunity to sign him in 2018 when he was a rising star with the Vancouver Whitecaps - however, they decided against pursuing him due to his Canadian nationality.
During his teenage years, Davies made a name for himself as one of the most promising prospects in North America. His MLS debut at the age of just 15 and showed his immense potential, attracting attention from clubs worldwide.
In January 2019, Davies completed a move transfer to Bayern Munich for a fee of up to $22 million, setting a record for the largest outgoing transfer in MLS history at the time.
Since joining Bayern Munich, Davies has flourished as a left back and winger, solidifying his reputation as one of the premier players in his position across Europe. He has enjoyed incredible success, winning five Bundesliga titles and a Champions League trophy, while amassing over 150 appearances for the club.
But in a recent appearance on the Say Less Podcast, he revealed that the Spanish giants rejected him based on his nationality, which Davies described as a disappointment.
Davies was keen to add that Josep Bartomeu, who was the president of Barcelona at the time, didn't transmit this information to him.
Instead, he learned about Barcelona's stance through media reports, which claimed that the club cited his Canadian nationality as a reason for their decision and it's something that Davies has held with him throughout his career.
