Real Madrid have been given a huge boost in their ambition to sign Kylian Mbappe this summer, with PSG threatening to put the France striker on the transfer market before the end of the window.

Mbappe might have moved to Los Blancos last summer as a free agent but elected to sign a new two-year deal with PSG and remain with the club.

The 24-year-old’s contract had an additional year installed in it as an option for the player, which needed to be activated by the end of July. Mbappe has decided that he will not take up that option, meaning that he could potentially be a free agent when his deal expires at the end of June 2024.

This decision has sent PSG into a state of crisis, with the club now ready to put him on the transfer market. Real Madrid are likely to be the side that profits, although Manchester United and Chelsea both hold an interest in the player.

According to L’Equipe: “For PSG, the alternatives are simple: either the striker changes his mind and opens the door to an extension beyond 2024, or he will be put on the market before the end of the summer transfer window.”

Mbappe’s PSG relationship collapsing

Although the club and Fayza Lamari, Mbappe’s mother, have held talks, these have failed to clear the air and the French paper reports that the forward is “closer than ever” to leaving for Real Madrid.

Real Madrid are ready to pay up to €200 million for the attacker this summer and are able to offer him a net deal worth €25m per season in terms of his wages – a cut compared to what he is presently on at PSG.

Mbappe, meanwhile, continues to insist that he wants to remain at the Ligue 1 champions this season.

“I’ve just confirmed that I don’t want to activate the clause to stay for one more season. I’ve never discussed a contract extension with PSG. But I am happy to stay here next season,” he claimed in an interview of Gazzetta dello Sport, which was published on Wednesday.

Mbappe has scored 212 goals for PSG in 260 appearances for the Ligue 1 club since making a €180m move from Monaco in 2018.
