The Catalans currently sit third in La Liga behind Girona and Real Madrid, and are also on the verge of clinching qualification to the Champions League knockout phase after missing out last season.

But the Blaugrana are still keen to strengthen their squad, particularly at the back where they have at times looked fragile.

According to Fichajes, sporting director Deco has already made contact with Bayer Leverkusen over the availability of Jeremie Frimpong.

The 22-year-old Netherlands international has also been linked to Manchester United recently and would require an outlay of up to €50m in order to clinch his signature next summer.

Any deal at Camp Nou, however, will hang on the future of Joao Cancelo.

Cancelo is currently on loan at the club from Manchester City, an agreement which also includes a purchase option for the Blaugrana at the end of the season.

Should Barca decline to make the transfer permanent, Frimpong would be the natural choice to succeed the Portugal international in Xavi's starting XI.
