Barcelona are interested in signing former Real Madrid man Isco, according to a sensational Spanish report.

The Blaugrana are very keen on strengthening their midfield. Oriol Romeu was brought in in the summer to be a short-term replacement for the legendary Sergio Busquets, who followed Lionel Messi to Inter Miami. The ex-Chelsea man has been exactly what everyone expected him to be: a solid stopgap solution.

However, Xavi remains keen on adding a more long-term option to this position, which has seen the cash-strapped Catalans linked with a host of names, from Royal Antwerp wonderkid Arthur Vermeeren on the younger side of the spectrum, to Guido Rodriguez of Real Betis, a World Cup winner and target of Man Utd.

Yet, an astonishing report from Fichajes claims that, rather than strengthening the holding midfield position, Xavi and company could instead look to add a much more attacking option in the form of one of Rodriguez's teammates.

Isco to Barca?

The Spanish outlet claims that Isco, formerly of Real Madrid and Sevilla, is on the shortlist at Barcelona after resurrecting his career at Betis. The five-time Champions League winner spent several months as a free agent after leaving Sevilla in December 2022, but has hit like a bomb since signing for their city rivals.

His somewhat unspectacular three goals and three assists in 17 games don't quite do justice to just how good the Spaniard has been. Many thought that his career at the highest level was over after seven months without a club, but Isco has looked almost back to his best since arriving at Betis.

According to the above-mentioned report, this hasn't gone unnoticed by the higher-ups at Barcelona. "Sources indicate that Xavi sees Isco as a key element to improve the creativity and technical quality in Barcelona's midfield," the report claims. "Isco's outstanding performances with Betis have caught the attention of the coach, who considers the Spanish midfielder as a fundamental piece in his project to revitalise the team."
