Real Madrid made a surprise official announcement over Kylian Mbappe on Saturday, denying that they have made contact with the PSG attacker.

Mbappe has been linked with a move to the Bernabeu for years yet he spurned the opportunity to complete a transfer in the summer of 2022 by signing a new contract with Les Parisiens.

The deal, though, is up next summer and with the France international refusing to extend his stay at PSG, there remains the prospect of the 24-year-old forward completing a move to Los Blancos as a free agent prior to next season.

Madrid’s statement arrived after a report in AS claimed that Mbappe, who finished third in the Ballon d'Or, would be offered €35 million per season at the Bernabeu as it would be “impossible” for him to join the club for less than the net wage he earns in Paris.

It read: “Given the information recently issued and published by different media outlets, in which there is speculation about alleged negotiations between the player Kylian Mbappe and our club, Real Madrid CF would like to state that this information is completely false and that no such negotiations have taken place with a player who belongs to PSG.”

Was the statement a bluff from the Spanish side to cool tensions between themselves and PSG, or a genuine denial?

Real Madrid making themselves bulletproof

Le Parisien reports that the press release is nothing more than a legal strategy to stop Real Madrid being punished by PSG if talks have been opened between the player and Los Blancos.

Although Mbappe will be allowed to talk to foreign clubs before his deal at PSG has completely expired, that window will only open on 1 January, so any unapproved talks with the Ligue 1 leaders would be considered illegal.

This would open the door to Real Madrid being punished for tapping the player up.
