Real Madrid’s Rodrygo will sign a new long-term contract extension with the club on Wednesday, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Brazil international will commit his future to the Bernabeu side on a deal that will run until 2028, the football transfer news specialist has declared.

Rodrygo will follow in the footsteps of Vinicius Junior, who agreed a fresh contract with the 14-time European champions earlier this week, while Fede Valderde and Eduardo Camavinga are both expected to put pen to paper imminently.

Romano took to X, formerly Twitter, to post: “Rodrygo Goes puts pen to paper on new long term deal today - public announcement with Florentino Perez.

“New contract until June 2028 with €1 billion release clause, confirmed.”

The youngster’s decision to sign a new contract suggests that he’s been given long-term assurances over his place in the Real Madrid squad, which puts into question how Kylian Mbappe might be used at the club should he complete a switch as a free agent.

Mbappe typically plays off the wing for PSG, where he has proven to be most effective, but with Rodrygo and Vini Jr signing new Real Madrid deals, that only leaves the centre-forward spot as a vacancy in the starting XI.

Rodrygo, meanwhile, is already used to star status at the Bernabeu, having inherited Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous No.7 shirt at the club.

Rodrygo’s release clause will be set at €1 billion, which is becoming standard practice in Spain between Real Madrid and Barcelona as they seek to lock down their leading talent.

Legally, they have to instal such clauses in contracts in the country.

Vinicius Junior is one player who has had a €1bn release put into his deal, while Valverde and Camavinga will have the same figures put into their contracts.
