The former Real Madrid star's fall from grace continues apace. Still a revered figure and reliable servant to his country, football at the club level has long since ceased to be enjoyable for Rodriguez.

The attacking midfielder made a surprising return to LaLiga in the summer after a disappointing spell at Sao Paulo in Brazil but his fortunes haven't improved.

James joined popular Madrid-based side Rayo Vallecano in a sensational transfer but to date, he has only made six league appearances for his new club.

For weeks, speculation has surrounded the 33-year-old who is naturally unhappy about his lack of minutes and a winter exit is looking increasingly likely.

Rodriguez to link up with Messi?

According to Colombian outlet Direct TV, Inter Miami hold an interest in signing Rodriguez. It would be a move that would likely entail significant roster manoeuvring given the big-name stars already on the books in Fort Lauderdale.

The side of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba et al recently appointed Javier Mascherano as their new head coach following the surprise resignation of Tata Martino.

Rodriguez is under contract at Rayo until next summer so a move ahead of the new MLS season in the spring would require a transfer fee. Given his disappointing performance levels in recent years, that figure shouldn't be too expensive, though.

A bigger question mark would be about his salary and how that would fit into MLS's stringent system of squad regulations. It is too early to say what roster space Rodriguez would occupy in the event of a move. Miami managed to sign Jordi Alba, for example, without making him a Designated Player.
