Controversy seems to have followed Mbappe around since his summer switch to Real Madrid as a free agent from PSG.

While his performances in Spain have been scrutinised because of their supposedly poor level, he is being attacked back in France because of a lack of commitment to the national team.

Mbappe has been left out of Les Bleus’ latest clashes against Israel and Italy, with Didier Deschamps simply indicating that it was by his choice and that “it’s better this way".

L’Equipe has dug into more detail about Mbappe’s relationship with his France teammates following September reports that goalkeeper Mike Maignan admonished him for showing a lack of leadership, despite having the captain’s armband.

It is claimed that “several players have noted his isolation in recent months and noticed his strained bond with Deschamps”.

Nevertheless, it is said that he remains “one of the most popular players in the locker room”.

Key allies such as former PSG teammate Ousmane Dembele or ex-Monaco colleague Youssouf Fofana are notably absent from the France call this time around, and it is hinted that those players being missing may have contributed to Mbappe sitting these matches out.

Mbappe treated harshly

Publicly, Mbappe continues to enjoy the support of his France teammates.

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate notably spoke about the pressure that the Real Madrid star is constantly under and said that he “would not want his life”, while RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano has praised the striker.

“We must not forget what Kylian did for the French team. We lack a little recognition towards him. I hope to see him again very soon, because he is very important to us,” he said.

The implication is that the media and fans are unnecessarily harsh on Mbappe, who has 48 goals in 86 games for France.
