Los Blancos are in the midst of a horrible injury crisis that has affected the defensive department in particular. Eder Militao has joined David Alaba and Joan Martinez on the treatment table, nursing an ACL injury.

With stand-in centre-back Aurelien Tchouameni also out injured and Jesus Vallejo not favoured by Carlo Ancelotti, Antonio Rudiger is the only senior, established option at the Italian's disposal at present.

Speculation surrounding Real Madrid's centre-back plans has been rampant following the injury to Militao, with some claiming that they will look for reinforcements in January, while others have stated that they will trust young players such as Raul Asencio.

Real Madrid have also been linked with free agents, and the name of club legend Sergio Ramos has frequently cropped up.

Ramos back to Real Madrid?

A few weeks ago, Ramos looked set to join Boca Juniors but nothing ultimately came of it. The 38-year-old has been keeping himself fit since his summer departure from Sevilla and is not yet ready to hang up his boots.

Spanish media has played down links with Real Madrid in recent days, insisting that the relationship between Ramos and the club brass, especially president Florentino Perez, is still broken after his move to PSG in 2021.

It was reported that when presented with the option of re-signing the Spaniard, the club board 'unanimously disapproved,' illustrating that there is little chance of an unexpected return.

However, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has not ruled out a move quite so emphatically. He has revealed that Ramos would love to rejoin Real Madrid but admitted that no negotiations are taking place at present.

"No contacts taking place between Real Madrid and Sergio Ramos over a possible return to the club as free agent," he wrote on X. "Ramos would be open and happy to return in case of Real's call, he loves Real Madrid, but no talks so far."
