Instead of signing January reinforcements, Real Madrid will hand Raul Asencio a new contract, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Real Madrid have found an in-house solution to their defensive crisis. 21-year-old Asencio has stepped up in the absence of Eder Militao, David Alaba and Aurelien Tchouameni and delivered.

The youngster, who started the season with reserve side Castilla, made his debut in that fateful 4-0 victory over Osasuna in which Militao suffered his second ACL injury in as many seasons.

Since then, Asencio has gone from strength to strength, playing the full 90 minutes against Liverpool in the Champions League and in the LaLiga wins over Leganes and Getafe.

With Jesus Vallejo completely out of favour, Asencio already finds himself high up in the defensive pecking order and he has made Los Blancos bosses forget about their injury crisis.

Asencio set for new contract

Club chiefs have made it clear to manager Carlo Ancelotti that he will not receive January reinforcements and the Italian has accepted the decision.

What Real Madrid will do to alleviate the problem, however, is to give Asencio a fresh contract that reflects his newfound importance to the first team.

At least that is according to Fabrizio Romano, who has revealed that the Spanish champions are 'very happy with his impact' and are 'planning' to table an offer for a new deal.

Real Madrid are set to give the defender a pay rise and to tie him to the club long-term. His current contract expires in 2026 and the LaLiga giants will ensure that he is going nowhere.

In the summer, Real Madrid sold promising centre-back Rafa Marin to Napoli after an impressive loan stint at Alaves. Perhaps recognising their mistake, they are now acting quickly to make sure that they have enough bodies at the club going forward.
