The future of Florian Wirtz continues to be hotly debated and Liverpool legend Didi Hamann believes that the youngster should pursue a move to Real Madrid.

The Bayer Leverkusen youngster is never not in the news in his native Germany. Wirtz has established himself as one of the undisputed best talents in European football and many believe that his next big move is only a matter of time.

Recently, however, doubt has been cast on the 21-year-old's future. Last week, the usually reliable German outlet Kicker published a bombshell report claiming that Wirtz had agreed a contract extension with Bayer Leverkusen.

In an almost unprecedented move, his club felt compelled to issue a public denial of the story, though it is nevertheless believed that the reigning Bundesliga champions are actually making good progress in talks with the attacking midfielder.

It, therefore, seems increasingly unlikely that Wirtz will be on the move in 2025, but that has not quieted the speculation surrounding his future.

Wirtz warned off Bayern move

A contract extension would do little to deter Leverkusen's rivals Bayern Munich from attempting a transfer offensive in the summer. Wirtz is the club's top target for 2025 and they are ready to break the bank to sign him.

The ball is in Leverkusen's court, however, and it would be a massive shock to see them sell to their direct title challengers. A much more likely scenario, should Wirtz actually end up moving, is that he heads to Spain or England.

Real Madrid have been linked with the German international and Liverpool legend Didi Hamann believes that joining Los Blancos would be much more sensible than linking up with Bayern due to the fact that the latter already have Jamal Musiala.

"I have serious concerns about whether they can play in one team," Hamann said on Sky 90. "If both play in one team, one would suffer. If I were Florian Wirtz, the risk of it being me would be too great for me.

"They are both best in the middle. Bayern have always played with wingers, so it could be that you push one to the side. Wirtz was hardly seen [at Euro 2024]. Musiala was the focus of attention at the European Championships and Wirtz had a supporting role, he is too good for that.

"If he signs [for Real Madrid], he will be brought in to fill a certain role. He will arrive there with credit in the bank."
