Manchester United legend Gary Neville has criticised Real Madrid for submitting an “insulting” January bid for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Liverpool defender is currently set to become a free agent this summer and he is widely expected to join Real Madrid on a Bosman deal when his contract at Anfield expires at the end of June.

However, Carlo Ancelotti’s side are eager to sign Alexander-Arnold before the January transfer window closes due to the ACL injury suffered by Dani Carvajal in October.

Los Blancos reportedly lodged a formal proposal for the England international last week, although this was quickly rejected by Liverpool, with Reds disinterested in discussing a January deal as they search for just their second ever Premier League title.

But, Neville believes that interest from Real Madrid played a part in Alexander-Arnold’s underwhelming performance against Man Utd on Sunday afternoon.

The 26-year-old was caught out of position on a number of occasions at Anfield, while he struggled to cope with Diogo Dalot’s pace and he conceded possession in the build-up to Lisandro Martinez’s opener.

What has Gary Neville said?

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Neville admitted: “The bid from Real Madrid is bad timing for him [Alexander-Arnold]. I don't know what’s going to happen with him, but certainly if you’ve got that going into a big game, and you’re a local lad, that won't be easy with the distractions.

“Real Madrid are a hell of an animal. It was insulting from them, they behave like that and think they can get what they want. But Liverpool are a club of immense stature, they’re never going to sell Trent for £20m in January. You're taking the mickey a bit.

“That will have probably unnerved him. You can imagine his agent, family and friends asking him how he’s doing, and that noise going on in his head before the game. That won’t have helped.”
