The 28-year-old has been a key figure for Hansi Flick since returning from injury in October and Barca are keen to keep hold of the midfielder but only if his new deal aligns with their ideal wage structure.

According to SPORT, Barca have made a final offer to De Jong which maintains his current €19 million salary but through a number of performance-based incentives, although he would have to forego the deffered wages he agreed during the pandemic.

There would also be a €80m release clause in his contract to allow flexibility for the player, which would prove intriguing combined with his lower basic salary, given the historic interest in him.

Man Utd had heavily pursued De Jong under Erik ten Hag’s management while Arsenal have also monitored the situation and could be encouraged to either intervene in negotiations or pursue the release clause if the Dutch international renews.

De Jong could be sold despite desire to stay at Barca

De Jong is said to be keen to stay at Barcelona but his contractual situation has led to interest from a number of other sides across Europe who may look to take advantage of the stall in negotiations.

Barca have already renewed the contracts of Pau Cubarsi, Pedri and Gavi in recent times, while Ronald Araujo also committed his future to the club with a similar-valued release clause in his new deal.

De Jong has not responded to Barcelona’s offer of a new deal yet and the La Liga giants will likely look to sell him this summer if he continues to hesitate over his future.

Previously, a large sticking point for De Jong has been the salary that he agreed to agreed to defer under the previous regime during Barca’s worst financial crisis, which would take his annual salary to around €26m according to reports.
