Going into the final Group Stage matchday, Xavi’s side needed get the better of Bayern in Munich or hope that Benfica stumbled at home against Dynamo Kiev.
However, Barca were thumped 3-0 by Bayern, while Benfica won 2-0. These results meant that Benfica finished above Barcelona in second place - relegating the Blaugrana down to the Europa League.
So how much will Barca miss out on after failing to get out of their group?
How much money will Barca miss out on?
Fortunately for clubs like Barcelona, who come from one of the major leagues and have a lucrative TV deal behind them, much of the money made from the Champions League is secured upon qualifying for the group stages.
In the last published accounts by UEFA, Barca made no less than €80 million from simply reaching the Group Stage in the 2019/20 season. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a serious amount of money up for grabs in the latter stages.
If Barca had reached the Round of 16, that would immediately have netted them a further €9.5m, followed by a further €10.5m if they had progressed on to the Quarter Finals of the competition.
Similarly, a somewhat unlikely march to the Semi Finals of the Champions League would have earned Barca a further €12m and had they reached the Final they would have expected to earn another €15m and then a further €4m for winning that one-off game.
In total, Barca are giving up a potential €51m after failing to pick up the necessary result to get out of their group. Which could prove disastrous for the club given its precarious financial situation.
