Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo may be experiencing an uncharacteristic dry spell in front of goal, but on Wednesday he will face one of his favourite ever opponents in the form of Atletico Madrid.

Man Utd tackle Atleti in the last 16 of the Champions League, with the first leg to be played at the Wanda Metropolitano.

As a former Real Madrid player, Ronaldo is sure to get a hot reception at the Spanish venue, but he will hope to silence the home fans by finding the net.

Ronaldo's prolific Atleti record

The legendary Portuguese is no stranger to scoring goals against Diego Simeone’s men, who have been a regular prey for the 37-year-old throughout his career.

This will be the 36th time that Ronaldo has faced Atletico Madrid and, in these games, he has scored an incredible 25 goals and created nine more.

Indeed, Ronaldo has only scored more goals against Sevilla (27 in 18 matches) in his storied career. Only against Espanyol (10 in 16 games) has he created more goals for others.

His most memorable moments against Atleti have come in the Champions League. He scored one goal and created another in the 4-1 final victory of 2014 then famously converted the winning penalty in the 2016 final shootout.

A year later, Ronaldo scored a first-leg hat-trick as Los Blancos made yet another final, and even after moving to Juventus he continued to terrorise Simeone’s men. In the last 16 of 2019, he scored an iconic hat-trick as the Serie A side came from a two-goal first-leg deficit to progress.

In total, he has scored four hat-tricks against Atleti.

Unsurprisingly, then, Ronaldo’s results versus Simeone’s side have been impressive. From 35 previous fixtures, he has helped his teams secure 17 wins and has suffered only nine defeats.

Ronaldo’s formidable record against Atletico Madrid, then, bodes well for Manchester United.
