Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that Mohamed Salah needs to learn from Philippe Coutinho's past mistake and stay at the club.

Salah's contract is up at the end of the 2022-23 campaign, and he is yet to decide on his long-term future.

The Egyptian, who has registered the most goals and assists in the Premier League this season, has been offered a lucrative new deal at Anfield.

However, with interest from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, it remains to be seen whether he can be convinced to leave.

But Carragher is adamant that the 29-year-old would be better off staying put, having played so well since he signed from Roma in 2017.

He has 117 goals in just five Premier League seasons, rapidly rising up the all-time scoring charts.

And while Carragher thinks the Liverpool players will be focused on lifting silverware in the coming days, he urges Salah to sign the contract sooner rather than later.

''They have got to focus on creating history in less than a couple of weeks,'' said the Sky Sports pundit. ''I don’t think it will be at the forefront of their mind.''

''I think [Sadio] Mane will sign, Salah’s future is up in the air and [Roberto] Firmino may see his contract out. He may go for free at the end of next season.

''I think Salah should sign. He [Klopp] has turned good players into great players and Salah is one of them.

''This suits him, Jurgen Klopp suits him, but I think he should remember about two or three players who left and thought the grass was greener and then look at what they are doing this season."

What happened to Coutinho?

In 2018, Philippe Coutinho left Liverpool for Barcelona in a remarkable £142 million deal.

However, he failed to produce his best form at Camp Nou, and now finds himself on loan at Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa side.

As such, Carragher has instructed Salah to learn from Coutinho's mistake, continuing at Anfield where he has enjoyed so much success.

''Gini Wijnaldum was one of them, Coutinho was one of them, another one was Emre Can who wasn't quite at that level,'' the former England defender added.

''But they are three players who thought maybe they deserved more off Liverpool in terms of wages, made the move and it's never been the same for them.''
