‘He has a lot of quality’ – Makaay on potential Barcelona move for Memphis Depay
Ex-Tenerife and Deportivo La Coruna striker Roy Makaay has backed a potential move for Lyon’s Memphis Depay by Barcelona.
Rumours that the Blaugrana were interested in Depay surfaced heavily over the summer, and with Ronald Koeman knowing the player from his time as Netherlands boss, it’s no surprise.
Makaay, who won the European Golden Boot in the 2002-03 season with 29 goals, believes that his compatriot would be an excellent addition to this Barcelona side.
“Depay is a very good player, although I still don’t see him at the level he had before of the injury. [He’s] not a pure 9 but if he goes to Barça for sure it can be important because he has a lot of quality” he said on Radio Marca.

Depay has regained the form that he displayed at PSV in France, and his unfortunate time at Manchester United is a thing of the past.
With eight goal contributions in just seven Ligue 1 starts this season, more than any current Barcelona player can boast, Depay would add quality, and the ability to do the unexpected if he were to join the Camp Nou based side, a move that Makaay is certainly behind.
Makaay praise for Koeman
Plenty of praise was also handed out by Makaay to his fellow Dutchmen in the Barca dugout: “Koeman is showing that he gives opportunities to young players.
“I love Ansu Fati” he added, “what he is showing is a very high level for an 18-year-old kid.
“I also like Pedri, I didn’t know him and if you like football you’ll like watching him play”.
With a crop of youngsters coming through, as well as several of the old guard failing to perform as they used to, Depay could be exactly what Barcelona need to push on in the next few years.
