Marcelo reveals he rejected Liverpool transfer bid in January
Lyon defender Marcelo has confirmed that he rejected a bid from Liverpool during the January transfer window.
The struggling Premier League champions have been decimated by defensive injuries this season, losing Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip to long-term problems.
Liverpool were forced into the January market to sign some central defenders, and they eventually purchased Ben Davies from Preston and Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke.
But before that, they tried to sign veteran Lyon defender Marcelo, with L’Equipe reporting that the Brazilian rejected Liverpool because they only offered him a six-month contract.
“Liverpool? My agent spoke with them, but I feel good here,” he told Canal Plus.
“My dream is to win the championship with Lyon.”
Marcelo’s contract with the Ligue 1 leaders expires in the summer, but he hopes to pen an extension.
“I hope we will find a solution soon. I feel good here and I feel that I can give more to Lyon,” he added.
“Over time, I hope that we will find a good solution.”
Marcelo joined Lyon from Besiktas for €7 million in 2017.
Liverpool also attempted to sign Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car during the January transfer window.
