Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe successfully ignored transfer rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid to reach a career landmark on Saturday against Montpellier.

In the penultimate match of PSG’s season, Mauricio Pochettino’s side ran out easy 4-0 winners against an opponent that is both out of form and beset by injury issues.

Mbappe took advantage of their struggles to ensure that he has enjoyed his best season ever as a professional on a personal basis.

In setting up the opening goal for Lionel Messi with an exquisite outside-of-the-foot pass, he was implicated in his 55th goal of the season – a new personal best. Later in the match, he would brilliantly set the Argentine up again and would score a penalty of his own to cap the victory and end a run of three successive draws for the Ligue 1 champions.

Mbappe has, therefore, scored 36 goals this season and generated a further 21 assists.

Mbappe's incredible season

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this record is the background noise that has been dogging the player all season.

He was subject to a €200 million bid from Real Madrid on Transfer Deadline Day last August and has since been constantly questioned over his plans.

Mbappe, to some extent, has been responsible for this situation by keeping his cards close to his chest with regards his future, with media and supporters alike left guessing whether he intends to stay at PSG or make a free transfer to Real Madrid when his contract expires at the end of June.

More clarity is expected at the end of the campaign, with an announcement possible following PSG’s final match of the season against Metz at Parc des Princes next weekend.

Mbappe’s achievement this season, meanwhile, simply underlines how impressive he has been for PSG over the course of the campaign, in which the side as a while has been widely perceived to have struggled.
