PSG have been warned that they would be taking a major risk if they were to punish Kylian Mbappe for his stance regarding his future at Parc des Princes.

The Ligue 1 champions have effectively put the 24-year-old World Cup winner up for sale by dropping him from the club’s tour of Japan because he is refusing to take out an additional one-year option in his contract in the French capital. The PSG squad is said to have been shocked by this development.

Mbappe wants to remain at PSG for the 2023/24 season and depart as a free agent next summer, at which point it is expected he will sign for Real Madrid.

The Parisians, meanwhile, believe that the player already has an agreement with the Spanish club in place, which has prompted them to seek an immediate sale.

According to RMC, PSG are considering a punishment for the player. The club, though, has been warned by the French player’s union (UNFP), that they must respect Mbappe’s current contract.

If they are found to be in breach of their responsibilities towards the player, Cadena SER (via FootMercato) reports that they could face punishment from the French FA (FFF). This would likely include a financial sanction.

Mbappe could also take PSG to court and in an extreme case could force his contract to be terminated unilaterally, potentially making him a free agent immediately. At this point, he might even be able to sue PSG for compensation.

However, there is no question of PSG breaching their responsibilities at present as they are under no obligation to pick the player. So long he is given access to the club’s infrastructure and trains normally with the squad, the Ligue 1 club face no legal threat.

Mbappe to Real Madrid latest

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was asked once again about his club’s stance over a summer transfer for Mbappe on Sunday and offered an evasive response as he went to vote in the Spanish legislative elections.

He told the media: “Mbappe? I’m still relaxed. Today, we vote, we don’t think of anything else. It’s a very important subject for Spaniards.”

Currently, Real Madrid remain in the driving seat regards Mbappe, but Arsenal, Liverpool and the Saudi Pro League are among the threats they could face for the PSG star before the summer is out.
