The Scottish champions had been on the search for a new manager when Gerrard opted to make a return to English football last week and become the new Aston Villa manager.

Routinely linked with the job and the hot favourite to replace the former Liverpool captain, Van Bronckhorst now makes a long heralded return to Ibrox after a successful playing career at the club which saw him win two league titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup over the course of 118 appearances.

Van Bronckhorst began his managerial career in 2015 when he made the step up from first team coach to manager of Feyenoord and went on to win the Dutch Cup in his first full season, before helping the club to their first league title in 18 years in 2017.

The Dutch manager then helped Feyenoord win another Dutch cup in the 2018/19 campaign, before leaving and eventually taking a job with the City Football Group in China, as the new manager of Guangzhou R&F.

Van Bronckhorst left the Chinese club in late 2020 during the global pandemic and had been out of work until now, where he hopes to continue Gerrard’s good work at Rangers and continue winning league title in Scotland.

’I look forward to continuing Gerrard’s good work’

“I am absolutely delighted to be returning to Rangers as the club’s new manager,” said the Dutch manager in a club statement on the Rangers website. a

“I feel so lucky to be going to work with a squad which is in a great position on all fronts and largely has that experience of being winners.

“I look forward to carrying on and enhancing the work that has been done already alongside Ross Wilson and the board of the club, and I’m grateful for the chance to work again at this huge football club.

“I cannot wait to meet the club’s incredible supporters again and begin this new era for us all.”
